Alberta Brain Injury Initiative

This presentation will provide the current approach for acute concussion management.

Description: Concussions range in severity from mild to severe and in some patients, symptoms can persist resulting in debilitating post-concussion syndrome (PCS). The initial events may be so distressing that patients go to the emergency department (ED) for assessment and treatment. Research has shown that CT scans of the brain are rarely indicative and delay discharge. They expose patients to needless radiation risks and add costs to the health care system. Rest (e.g., cognitive, emotional and physical) and graduated return to activities (e.g., sports, work) are recommended but limited evidence guides these practices. Moreover, patients are not often well-informed about their follow-up after discharge.
